Stirling Castle: Project Facts

Stirling Castle was built at the highest point in Stirling, Scotland, and dominates the forth, the strategic link between north and south.

  • A chapel existed on the castle grounds as early as 1124 AD.
  • The present castle dates mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries when it was the principle royal residence of James III, who was born there in 1451 AD.
  • Outside the main features are the central turreted gatehouse with its flanking towers and curtain wall.
  • Inside the main features are the Great Hall, the Palace, one of the earliest Renaissance building in Scotland and the Chapel Royal.
  • The inner buildings of Stirling Castle were once considered the ancient center of Scottish royal power.
